Watch out! They spit!
My older female guard llama,
Susie, was about 10 years old when she came to the
farm and what I consider to be a wide bodied llama
(some would just say fat). She had a bit of an attitude
when she came. Now I knew llamas could spit but
never really found myself the target. Susie quietly
settled in for a couple of months and then decided
she was ready to take charge. I thought we had somewhat
of a relationship going when one day she turned
and specifically took aim and spit at me. Not being
in the best of moods and not really sure how to
handle the incident I did the first that came to
mind, I spit back! Susie was quite surprised by
that response and decided not to engage and walked
off. She never directly spit at me again. On the
rare occasion that she may be upset, she turns her
head to spit. More often than not, she lays her
head on my shoulder and whispers into my ear. I'd
say that spitting match has turned into a lovely
relationship.
